Bird flu risk monitored

INSPECTION and quarantine bureaus are monitoring eight checkpoints for poultry entering Shanghai in a bid to prevent an outbreak of bird flu.
A 38-year-old man was recently identified as being infected with the H7N9 virus, but no poultry entering the city this month has tested positive for it, officials said. Monitoring is being increased ahead of the Chinese New Year, which will see a steep rise in the number of birds being sold to markets across the city. As was the case last year, the trade in live poultry will be banned in Shanghai between the Chinese New Year’s Day and April 30.
