Blood donation vehicles, outlets to return to popular locations
SOON it will be more convenient to donate blood as collection vehicles reappear at such locations as the Bund, Lujiazui, Hongqiao Transport Hub and Shanghai South Railway Station as part of an effort to reverse a drop in street-side collections in the past two years, officials said yesterday.
While collections from storefront outlets and vehicles used to cover over half of the city's donations in recent years, that number fell to 40 percent in 2011 and 45 percent last year.
The Shanghai Blood Administration Office also is asking local officials to allow donation vehicles to park at big events like festivals and plan for donor locations at new commercial and traffic centers such as Disneyland.
The economic downturn has discouraged migrant donors, but so have inconvenient donor locations, which officials said they hope to remedy.
Parking for donation vehicles was removed at major downtown commercial areas like Huaihai Road, Lujiazui and Xujiahui right before the 2010 Shanghai World Expo as well as because of commercial or infrastructure renovations in those downtown areas.
Many storefront locations are in places with few pedestrians and most of the parking places are on the outskirts.
