Blood transplant expected to save girl

THE 100th cord blood transplant of the year in Shanghai yesterday was expected to save the life of a nine-year-old girl.

The girl, Zi Yu, suffers from aplastic anemia and there has been no bone marrow match for her despite a search for the past year. Even her brother Wei Wei's bone marrow was only half matching. As her condition worsened recently, doctors at Shanghai Children's Medical Center decided to transplant cord blood and Wei Wei's bone marrow together into her body to raise the chance of success.

She has the risk of rejection and infection, but her disease is expected to be under control.
