Breast cancer cases up 30% in past decade

THE incidence of breast cancer among local women has risen by almost 30 percent in the past 10 years due to people living longer, the Shanghai Center of Disease Control and Prevention said in a press release yesterday.

The rate is now 66 cases per 100,000 women, said the release, which was issued ahead of International Women’s Day, which falls today.

Age is the main reason for the rise in both the incidence rate and deaths from breast cancer, with the latter rising by 44 percent to 19 cases per 100,000 over the past decade, the release said.

Women aged between 50 and 79 are most at risk, it said.

“About 4,700 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in Shanghai every year,” said Dr Zheng Ying, director of the cancer prevention department at the disease control center.

“It is the biggest killer of women among all the cancers, and early detection and treatment are crucial,” he said.

Zheng advised all women to have regular screens for breast cancer and also familiarize themselves with their family history with regards to the killer disease.
