British cancer woman dies in UK

TANIA Matthews, the British woman with terminal cancer, died yesterday at a hospice in the United Kingdom. She was 37. Donations from expatriates in Shanghai have risen to 1,500 pounds (US$2,382) after a report in Shanghai Daily yesterday said that Matthews wanted the money to be donated to the hospice in which she was living.

Online donations reached 750 pounds yesterday.

Many local expats are donating money for Matthews, who took part in a lot of charity and volunteer work when she lived in Shanghai between 2002 and 2005.

Her husband said he was thankful for all the donations, and added that his wife passed away peacefully.

Her husband said he knew Shanghai Daily would report on the donations, but his wife could not hold on long enough to see the report published.

"We are very sad that she has passed away, but we will continue fundraising for the hospice as a tribute to Tania and all other cancer sufferers like her," said Lois Freeke, one of her best friends in Shanghai.
