Burned boy has chance at normal life after free care

A 4-YEAR-OLD boy from Sichuan Province had free surgery at a local hospital yesterday to remove scars and release a tightening of the skin on his hip joint caused by serious burns.

Li Chuanjiang was stable yesterday after successful surgery at Shanghai Bailida Plastic Surgery Hospital, doctors said. He will be in the hospital for two weeks. The surgeries aim to help the boy walk properly.

Li, in the care of his grandparents while his parents took jobs in big cities, was scalded by hot water during a bath in April 2011. His left thigh and the waist had three-degree burns, the most severe.

He received treatment for the burns but had to stop after three months because his family couldn't afford it though he couldn't walk properly.

The hospital did free operation on Li's knee joint in 2011, the first step to help him.
