Cancer drug shortage over soon

A MEDICINE used to treat children with cancer that has been in short supply for a couple of years, might soon be more readily available.
A company that produces the drug — dactinomycin — is expected to recommence production next month after passing government checks.
Several companies that used to make it stopped doing so because it is not very lucrative — a ceiling price was set by the government many years ago,Changjiang Times reported.
“Dactinomycin has been used in clinical practice since the 1960s with proven effects,” said Dr Tang Jingyan, director of hematology and oncology department from Shanghai Children’s Medical Center.
The antibiotic costs 20 yuan (US$3.10) per injection, Tang said, adding that her hospital currently has only 10 shots left in stock.
