Children鈥檚 hospital scheme is a class act
THEY aren’t able to go to school so the schools are coming to them.
Shanghai Children’s Hospital has turned one of its wards into a classroom for young patients.
Volunteer teachers from 12 nearby schools will visit the hospital’s inpatient building in Putuo District to teach hospitalized children in the “Rainbow Bay” every Tuesday from 3pm to 4pm.
“Each school has about 10 teachers taking part in the volunteer program, and we have developed four courses — math, art, English and Chinese reading — and psychological counseling will also be given periodically,” said program director Wang Zheng. The classes will be taught in three age groups: preschoolers, primary students and middle school students.
The idea to establish Rainbow Bay emerged in 2014 when the mother of a girl who had cancer told hospital president Yu Guangjun that her daughter would love to be able to continue her studies while undergoing treatment, and asked him to organize classes. The pilot program, which started on Saturday, mainly serves patients suffering from cancer and kidney diseases, but it will be expanded to serve a more diverse range of patients in the future, Wang said.
The mother of a 5-year-old girl with cancer told Shanghai Daily at the opening ceremony on Saturday that she welcomed the program as her daughter loved going to kindergarten before she became ill last October.
“I’m really glad that she can enjoy the school experience in hospital,” she said.
“It gives her some opportunities for socializing and learning something rather than just being in the ward where her life is dull and painful.”
