Chinese patients with terminal stage of breast cancer offered free medication provided by charity program
Domestic patients with terminal stage of breast cancer can get free medication under a charity program launched by China Women’s Development Foundation, officials announced in the city.
Breast cancer patients, who are responsive to Faslodex, a new type of endocrine treatment for advanced breast cancer, can have three-month dosage of the medicine for free after paying for the medicine for three months beforehands and pass doctor’s evaluation.
The medicine developed by UK-based pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca is an estrogen receptor antagonist with no agonist effects while stabilizing patient’s condition.
Dr Hu Xichun from Shanghai Cancer Center said about 70 percent of beast cancer patients have good response to endocrine treatment, which is used by over 60 percent of patients in Europe. However, the prevalence of such medicine is not wide in China due to its high cost.
