City conducts 100th blood and marrow transplant

THE 100th cord blood and marrow transplant in Shanghai this year is expected to save the life of a 9-year-old girl. It was performed yesterday morning at the Shanghai Children's Medical Center, a hospital official said today.

The girl named Zi Yu suffered from aplastic anemia and failed to find a matching bone marrow in the past 18 months. Her condition deteriorated recently, putting her life at risk.

On Saturday, the Shanghai Cord Blood Bank found a blood sample suitable for Zi Yu. The hospital immediately arranged an operation to transplant the cord blood and her brother's bone marrow into her body.

The transplant result will be assessed in one to two months, doctors said.

As of yesterday, the cord blood bank has provided 110 blood samples to 100 patients, nearly double the amount it provided last year.
