City gets 5 new swine flu cases
FIVE new swine flu cases were reported in Shanghai yesterday - the most in a single day.
All flew in on separate flights from different countries.
Yesterday's toll brings the city's total to 23, with 11 already recovered and discharged from the hospital, according to the Shanghai Health Bureau.
The five new patients, all under treatment at the Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center, were in stable condition last night, the bureau said.
The latest case was a 49-year-old Canadian woman who arrived on Friday on Air Canada flight AC087 from Toronto. She began running a fever on Sunday and went to Huashan Hospital.
Among the other cases was a 33-year-old Chinese woman who came in on China Eastern Airlines flight MU546 from Singapore on Saturday afternoon. She was healthy on arrival but started to develop a fever late Saturday night.
Another victim was a 16-year-old American boy flying from the United States to Japan and taking All Nippon Airways flight NH0921 from Tokyo to Shanghai on Saturday night.
He was found feverish by entry-exit officials checking passenger temperatures aboard the plane and was sent to Pudong Infectious Disease Hospital for quarantine and treatment.
A fourth case involved a 49-year-old Taiwan native who arrived in Shanghai on China Eastern Airlines flight MU586 from Los Angeles on Friday night.
He went to Jing'an District Central Hospital on Sunday morning with cold symptoms.
The other case was a 36-year-old Canadian woman who flew to Shanghai on Cebu Pacific flight 5J678 flight Manila on Thursday night. She started to develop a fever on Saturday and went to Renji Hospital for treatment on Sunday morning.
As of last night, the number of swine flu cases on the mainland rose to 226 after Shanghai and other areas reported 41 new cases.
