City hospital in autism figures study

A SHANGHAI hospital is leading China’s first research program to establish how widespread autism is among the country’s children.

Researchers led by the Children’s Hospital of Fudan University are screening 120,000 children aged between 6 and 12 in eight major cities, experts told the Shanghai International Autism Forum yesterday.

Cities in the epidemiological study include Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou in Guangdong Province.

Samples from 1,200 children found to have autism will be collected for research, including genetic studies.

Results are due to be published next year, delegates at the forum heard.

“Research and treatment on autism lags behind in China, which has no unified and regular diagnostic standards and professional guidelines for early intervention and treatment,” said Dr Wang Yi, vice president of the Children’s Hospital of Fudan University and chief scientist of the research.

“The research is a start to have a clear understanding of the disease in the nation and build up regular clinical practice and training system,” she added.

Wang estimates that 1 percent of China’s children could be on the autistic spectrum.

In the 2110 census, China had 145 million children aged between 5 and 14.
