City launches 3-year training program on rare diseases
SHANGHAI Foundation for Rare Diseases yesterday announced a three-year training program among local medical staff on rare diseases diagnosis and treatment. A book on rare diseases will be also issued in February next year as the nation’s first book on treatable rare diseases and teaching book for medical staff.
Public educational materials on rare diseases prevention and control will also be issued in February to promote the knowledge in local maternity hospitals, officials said.
The foundation, which started operation in 2015, is the nation’s first regional foundation focusing on rare diseases research, treatment and patient aid.
There are about 200,000 people suffering rare disease in Shanghai and half of them are children.
About 80 percent of rare diseases are caused by genetic deformity and less than 5 percent of them can be interfered or treated effectively.
Diseases with incidence lower than one in 500,000 in the public and lower than one in 10,000 newborn are considered rare diseases. There are about 7,000 rare diseases identified globally so far.
