City learns about Parkinson鈥檚

SHANGHAI learned yesterday that it takes on average about 10 months for patients with Parkinson’s Disease to get a correct diagnosis since first showing symptoms — and about 23.5 percent of patients can get a wrong diagnosis.
Medical experts revealed the figures at a health lecture yesterday to mark the World Parkinson’s Disease Day. Between 80,000 and 100,000 city residents are estimated to have the disease.
Eighteen leading hospitals in Shanghai also teamed up to establish a Parkinson’s Disease prevention and control network to provide unified medical care and promote knowledge on the disease.
“Community doctors also have poor awareness on the disease,” said Dr Liu Zhenguo from Xinhua Hospital.
