City role in DEHP standard

OFFICIALS from Shanghai Food and Drug Administration said yesterday they are helping draft a national standard for DEHP, a plastic polymer added to thickening agents to reduce costs at the center of the current Taiwan food scandal.

Officials said DEHP can be absorbed by food through plastic packaging. However, normally the quantity would be hundreds of times less than if the substance was deliberately added.

Meanwhile, Shanghai Prosecutors' Office said prosecutors will concentrate on seven types of criminal cases involving government employees' malpractice in food safety. These include abuse of power to issue licenses to unqualified food companies.
