City's centenarians have things in common
A 112-year-old woman was named Shanghai’s top “longevity star” today as the city announced that it had recorded more than 1,700 centenarians by the end of 2015.
The city’s oldest resident Zhu Xiaohua was born in 1904 and has a strong good memory and regularly exercises. She enjoys chatting and sweet food. Zhu said she never took any nutrition supplements but eats a cup of yogurt every day.
A ceremony was held to honor the city’s “longevity stars” and centenarian couples ahead of the Chongyang Festival tomorrow, which falls on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month and is a day to honor seniors.
Chen Zhongbo, 106, and Gao Sujun, 105, were the two stars who attended the ceremony.
Chen still does not need any assistance while taking bath and also washes clothes himself.
“I wash quilts, blankets and clothing myself and I like playing mahjong,” he told Shanghai Daily in a clear voice.
He spends four hours playing mahjong every day with other seniors at a senior home where he lives.
Chen is usually the winner at mahjong table, his daughter Chen Surong said.
He is also not picky about food.
“I prefer fat meat,” he said with a grin.
Chen, who sleeps early and gets up early, said he wanted to donate his body after death.
The centenarians may have different experiences, but most of them are broad-minded, even-tempered, not picky about food, exercise properly, don’t smoke and sleep on time, said Sun Pengbiao, secretary general of the Shanghai Gerontological Society.
