Cutting-edge brain sciences center established in city

THE Chinese Academy of Sciences established a brain sciences center in Shanghai yesterday that will focus on cutting-edge questions in neuroscience, with the aim of achieving international recognition, officials said.

The CAS Center for Excellence Brain Science is part of the Institute of Neuroscience, Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences of the academy.

It will also act as a location for assembling and fostering leading neuroscientists in China.

The center is one of five excellence centers created by CAS, in an effort to drive innovative research in cutting-edge fields.

All the excellence centers will be provided with individualized policies on budget management, talent cultivation and evaluation.

A third-party, international evaluation will be held every two to three years as a mid-term review and every five years as a comprehensive review.

The centers need to pass the comprehensive overview in order to remain in operation.
