Doctors available by app-ointment
A LOCAL hospital recently completed testing a new service that allows people to interact with doctors via an app.
“The online hospital has been used 100,000 times in the past three months,” Zhu Fu, president of Xuhui District Central Hospital, told Shanghai Daily yesterday.
“During that period, 10 of our 40 doctors were online every day between 8:30am and 4:30pm,” he said.
The app indicates the names and availability of the various medics at any given time and users can click to communicate with whichever they choose, Zhu said.
“Once connected, the doctors and patients can see each other via a webcam, and can also communicate through typed messages and send each other documents,” he said.
“The test showed the app to be most useful for people in need of general consultations or with chronic diseases,” he said.
“It’s also great for the elderly, who would otherwise have to make frequent visits to the hospital to pick up their prescriptions,” he said.
Since the launch of the trials, the hospital has also teamed up with 70 pharmacies, 40 nursing houses and 100 clinics, all of which now act as dispensaries for medicines on presentation of a doctor’s digital signature via the app.
“Its main advantage is that it stops people having to traipse to the hospital and queue for hours for straightforward procedures,” Zhu said.
If an online consultation is not sufficient to resolve a medical issue, patients can use the app to make an appointment to visit the hospital in the usual way, he said.
In the future, patients’ medical records will be available via a computer database, so that whichever doctor is online, he or she will have a picture of that person’s needs while carrying out the consultation, he said.
