Drug test center will help battle cancer
A NEW cancer drug trial center opened over the weekend to provide a platform for testing new drugs, and a network of 37 specialists from 33 hospitals was also established.
The aim of both programs is to help patients and to boost the development of new drugs and get approved new drugs to the local market sooner.
The center at Shanghai East Hospital is a phase I clinical trial center with 20 beds. This is open for people who want to participate in the trial of any new drug developed domestically or globally.
It will eventually have another 20 beds for doctors to research the patients who benefited from such trials, said doctor Li Jin, director of Shanghai East Hospital’s oncology department.
The center’s US partner is South Texas Accelerated Research Therapeutics, the world’s largest phase I cancer drug research center.
Phase 1 trials involve testing drugs on healthy volunteers to assess dosage, before moving on to Phase II which looks at potential side Effects.
International facilities share data for meeting approval for new drugs in the United States.
The new Sino-US research center will help fast-track local approval for new drugs from around the world and will help foreign pharmaceutical companies enter the Chinese market. It will also help Chinese companies enter the global market.
“The cooperation can help improve China’s clinical diagnosis and treatment capabilities regarding cancer and with new drug development in oncology,” Li said.
