Drugs haul in 5 months matches last year

LOCAL police seized almost the same quantity of drugs in the first five months of this year as for all of 2013, figures show.

Up to the end of May, officers tackled nearly 2,700 drug cases involving more than 2,900 suspects and seized some 660 kilograms of drugs.

This compares with a total drugs haul of 667kg by Shanghai police last year, officers said yesterday.

More than half of the drugs found in the city last year came from other regions of the country, while 7 percent were from overseas, police said.

According to police, the main domestic sources of drugs coming into Shanghai were Guangdong Province in southern China and the southwestern province of Yunnan.

Major overseas sources included countries in Central and South America, said police.

About 80 percent of the drugs seized last year were synthetic drugs, such as methamphetamine, or “ice,” and ketamine.

Drugs entered the city through airports, by road and rail links and using express delivery.

While locals were the customers for some of the drugs, others were resold to Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Anhui provinces.

Police also found online drug dealing is booming.

Those held recently by police included a Hong Kong resident found with 12.5kg of cocaine at Shanghai Pudong International Airport.

Earlier this year, a gang of seven was caught with 11kg of methamphetamine in Yangpu District, while two people were held in Hongkou District with 29kg of the same drug.

This week, the Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People’s Court gave verdicts on four drugs cases. Trafficking more than 1kg of methamphetamine can bring a death sentence.

Two dealers surnamed Wang and Yang caught with 16kg of methamphetamine received death sentences, while an accomplice was jailed for life.

In another case, a man surnamed He who trafficked 1.6kg of methamphetamine and his buyer were sentenced to death.

Another man surnamed Duan who received a package containing nearly 2kg of methylamphetamine sent by an accomplice was jailed for life.

And a man surnamed Fan who bought 5kg of methamphetamine and the dealer who sold it were sentenced to death.
