Early diagnosis can cure gallbladder cancer
ABOUT 1 percent of patients with gallstones may develop gallbladder cancer, said doctors at the city's Renji Hospital.
The incidence of gallbladder cancer has more than doubled in the past 30 years due to changing diet and lifestyle and improved diagnosis methods.
"Gallstones are very common, particularly in middle-aged women. Many of them are unaware of this disease," said Dr Wang Jian at the Renji Hospital. "About 70 to 80 percent of gallbladder cancers are caused by gallstones."
People who are overweight and have a family history, particularly women in their 40s, are prone to gallbladder cancer, Wang said.
He suggested taking regular health examination and paying attention to the symptom of pain in the stomach area or in the upper right part of the belly under the ribs. When the symptom occurs, they should visit the doctor as soon as possible.
