Epilepsy 鈥榗an be controlled鈥
ABOUT 70 percent of children with epilepsy are able to keep it under control and the majority can recover if the condition is detected early and they take medication, local experts said yesterday, International Epilepsy Caring Day.
There are over 9 million people with epilepsy and 400,000 new patients every year. Children account for 60 percent of the patients.
“However, over 60 percent of domestic patients do not receive proper diagnosis and treatment,” said Dr Wang Zhiping, director of Shanghai Children’s Medical Center’s neurology department. “Epilepsy is a chronic disease like hypertension and diabetes, and most patients can live a normal life if they take medication and some can fully recover over time.”
