Facility to test new light source

SHANGHAI will begin construction of a testing facility for a new machine that can create super X-rays which are able to expose the atomic structure of complicated chemical compounds and proteins, officials with the Chinese Academy of Sciences told a Sino-Swiss conference at the World Expo site yesterday.

Officials said it will be the fourth generation of light source, which is more accurate and sharper than the third generation, like the light generated by the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility, which was completed in April last year.

Switzerland will finish constructing such a light facility in 2016, said officials from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, which has organized the three-day meet along with the CAS and Swissnex China at the Swiss pavilion.

"We have received approval from the central government and construction will kick off later this year or early next year," said Zhu Zhiyuan, vice director of the Shanghai branch of CAS. "The testing facility in Zhangjiang High-tech Park in Pudong will be ready within three years with an investment of 200 million yuan (US$29.58 million)."
