Free medical checks given to migrant women

An annual women's disease checkup campaign was launched in Shanghai's Fengxian District today to mark International Women's Day tomorrow.

Since 2008, the program has screened 69,939 migrant women, 40 to 60 percent of whom were found with breast or cervical diseases. The screenings also detected pre-cancerous expression or cancer in 41 women.

The women do not need to pay for the checkup.

"Previously, the free checks mostly covered women who do blue-collar jobs, but this year we are focusing on office ladies," said Dr Li Shuguang, president of Shanghai No. 411 Hospital of People's Liberation Army.

The hospital is doing the checks in cooperation with the Shanghai Trade Union.

Li said many female office workers don't receive regular physical checkups due to their busy schedule and low awareness.

"Less than one third of female office workers from other provinces voluntarily go to receive female disease checkups," he said.
