Free surgery to let Guangxi boy wear shoes and play

A 14-year-old boy from a poor ethnic minority family in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region received a free surgery in Shanghai today to treat his abnormally big toes.

Meng Weixin's two toes were so big that he could not wear any shoes. The largest toe was about the size of an adult's fist. His upturned toes also made him unable to play basketball like other boys.

Meng was born with this deformity and his family was too poor to pay for his surgery estimated at 5,000 yuan (US$794) to 6,000 yuan.

Shanghai Children's Hospital learnt about Meng's misery from media reports and contacted his family for free treatment.
