Girl fabricates rape story to get free abortion
A 17-year-old girl lied to a Shanghai hospital that she was raped in order to get free abortion service, officials of the PLA No. 411 Hospital said today.
The girl living in Yangpu District called the hospital's service hotline 65876866 for a free surgery as she was "raped." The hospital operates the city's only hotline to offer help to young women troubled by teenage pregnancy.
However, doctors found she had been pregnant for over two months but the girl said the rape took place a month ago.
"She admitted that she got pregnant after having sex with her boyfriend and fabricated the story in order to receive a free abortion since she dared not to tell the truth to her parents," said Zhu Weijie, a hospital official. "We usually offer treatment free or at discount price to those who are really poor or were sexually attacked."
The hospital performed the abortion for the girl who collected money from her friends who escorted her to the hospital.
Health officials warned teenagers about the danger of unprotected sex especially during the long summer vacation in July and August.
"We now receive 50 to 80 calls every day and perform about 30 abortions daily, one-third more than the usual months," Zhu said. "About one-third of our young patients are under 20."
He said the hospital recently received a 16-year-old girl who met a man she got to know through a social website while her parents were not at home. That man disappeared after she told him about her pregnancy.
