Girl has nut removed from throat

A 5-YEAR-OLD girl who underwent emergency surgery to remove a pistachio nut that got stuck in her throat for a week was discharged from the hospital yesterday.

The girl’s parents hired a taxi all the way from Jiangsu Province to Shanghai for the surgery on Sunday after her condition worsened and local hospital failed to help them.

The girl, from Yancheng and suffering from cerebral palsy, was treated at the Shanghai Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital in downtown Xuhui District.

The nut was removed in 30 minutes by the doctors.

The family said the nut got stuck in the throat on February 1. Since she was only coughing, they took it easy. But her condition worsened last Saturday and she started to lose consciousness.

That was when they rushed her to the local hospital, which told them to take the girl to Shanghai for treatment.
