Health reforms open up avenues
FOR the first time in the city, a state-owned hospital has enlisted the services of doctors outside the hospital to offer specialized medical services to its patients.
Punan Hospital in the Pudong New Area is offering its patients access to leading medical experts from home and abroad after reaching an agreement with several doctors’ collectives, most of whose members are former medical practitioners from state-run hospitals.
Previously, the doctors groups were restricted to joint ventures and private hospitals as the state hospitals could not cooperate with them under conservative mechanism.
Punan officials said it was carrying out a health reform program that encouraging doctors to work in more than one hospital and offering services in line with patients’ various demands.
Besides reaching an agreement with a local doctor’s group, Punan said it had also reached a cooperation deal with “Best Doctors Club,” which has foreign doctors offering medical consultation and even surgery for patients in the hospital.
“Like Western hospitals, medical institutions provide a clinical platform with good facilities and staff while leading experts bring patients and do surgeries by using the hospitals’ equipment,” said Dr Liu Weidong, president of Punan Hospital.
“Patients in Pudong don’t have to go to the crowded big hospitals in downtown or visit expensive joint venture hospitals.
“Experts can now be called to our hospital,” Lu said.
Chinese doctors usually work in one hospital for their entire professional life.
Patients are usually attracted by the big name of the hospitals instead of doctors, who don’t have the motivation to study further because of poor pay.
With the current health reforms being carried out city-wide, more medical experts are leaving state-owned hospitals to join doctors groups that not only helps in professional development but has also boosts their pay packets.
“State-owned hospitals should follow this trend and open the doors for more self-employed doctors, who can bring patients with their skills,” Liu said.
