Heart surgery saves baby when Dubai doctors can't
A TWO-MONTH-OLD girl born in Dubai with heart defects was discharged from Shanghai Children's Medical Center yesterday after successful surgery.
The girl, whose parents are both Chinese who were working in the United Arab Emirates, was sent to the hospital early this month after doctors in Dubai said she was too small to survive the surgery.
The baby was very weak and was suffering from complex heart defects and a lung infection. She had holes between sections of the heart and high arterial pressure in her lungs. Without surgery, she would die soon, said Xia Lin, an official at the Shanghai hospital. The girl had surgery two weeks ago.
"The girl was removed from a respirator five days after surgery and recovered very quickly. She has grown from 2.25 kilograms to 3.3 kilograms and will grow up like a healthy child," Xia said.
