LOCAL doctors are warning people not to brew and drink herbal tea blindly because herbal tea is medicine. Some, instead of relieving their internal heat, may cause diarrhea, stomachache and other symptoms.
Herbal tea is very popular in summer months with all sorts of brewing recipes spreading on the Internet. Traditional Chinese medicine stores are also cashing in on the trend by selling ingredients.
Dr Wang Qihuai of the Xupu Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital said herbal tea is medicine and people should not be careful of its side effects.
Local TCM pharmacies said herbs as tea ingredients are selling very well lately. Their sales have jumped 30 percent.
"Different ingredients have different medicinal properties and should be used according to the health condition of each individual," Wang said. "People with poor digestion, hypertension and cold symptoms should go to a doctor for herbal tea prescription."
