Home, after 8 months in a coma

A YOUNG man who had been in a coma for more than eight months after being hit by a car was discharged from a Shanghai hospital yesterday afternoon.

Fan Zhigang, 18, had woken from his coma in the No. 3 People's Hospital at the end of August.

"It was a miracle for him to regain consciousness within such a short period of time," said Huang Boli, a head nurse who has been looking after Fan.

Huang said it will take time for Fan to resume normal physical functions, and he still requires surgery.

Fan, who used to work at a fast-food restaurant in Shanghai, fell into a coma last December.

Under the guidance of nurses, Fan's parents gave him massages, and his mother told him stories and played his favorite music.

"He is still too young. How could we give up?" Fan's mother said.

In early August, Fan's parents and Huang found him able to respond physically and at the end of the month he finally opened his eyes.
