Hospital denies telling docs to carry riot shields

Shanghai Changzheng Hospital said yesterday it does not require doctors to carry riot shields as protection against aggressive patients.
The announcement was made after a doctor was pictured in a microblog holding a shield while talking to a patient. The hospital said it does not have a policy on the issue and that the doctor acted on his own initiative. The shields are provided by a security company and are sometimes used in high-risk departments due to the recent increase in violence against staff, it said.
