Hospital for blood disease coming up in Jiading

THE world’s biggest hospital for treating blood disease will be built in the city’s Jiading District and is expected to start operation in 2017.

The hospital will be capable of carrying out more than 1,000 hematopoietic stem cell transplant surgeries for patients with blood disease every year.

It will also fill in the gap of a specialist blood disease hospital in the city, said Zhou Lei, an official with the Shanghai Cord Blood Bank.

The first phase of the Blood Disease Hospital affiliated to China Stem Cell Group Co Ltd will be located at the intersection of Yongsheng and Shuangding roads in Jiading and will cover an area of about 60 mu (40,020 square meters).

Construction is expected to be completed next year and it will become operational in 2017.

About 1,000 hematopoietic stem cell transplants have been conducted in Shanghai since the bank was established in 2004. But there is still no specialist hospital in the area in the city, the bank said.

Currently, only 3,000 stem cell transplants are carried out every year across China due to a shortage of qualified hospitals and facilities, falling far short of the demand.

There are only 100 hospitals that can handle stem cell transplants in China, and their laminar flow cabinets are small, the bank said.

There are about 5 million leukemia patients in China, with half of them children. That figure is growing at 40,000 every year.

But about 95 percent of them cannot receive effective stem cell transplant treatment in time due to shortage of medical facilities.

Ruijin Hospital and the Jiangsu Province Blood Institute will provide technical support to the new hospital.
