Hospital removes rare tumor

A rare type of tumor has been removed from a woman’s heart, Shanghai No. 1 People’s Hospital revealed yesterday.

The 20-centimeter-long tumor reached from the patient’s uterus to her heart, according to doctor Yuan Zhongxiang.

The 40-year-old patient, identified as Wu, underwent uterine fibroid removal surgery in a hospital outside Shanghai eight months ago. However, another lump was detected in her uterus and heart last week during a health check.

Wu decided to come to Shanghai for treatment, and an examination at Shanghai No. 1 People’s Hospital confirmed that there was a tumor not only in her uterus but in arteries connecting it to other organs.

The hospital said the tumor, which was shaped like a snake, was very rare, and only about 100 similar cases have been reported around the world.

Wu underwent a five-hour operation to have her uterus and the tumor removed. She was said to be in stable condition after surgery.
