Hospitals feel the stress

LOCAL pediatric hospitals are reporting about 30 percent jump in the number of patients as temperatures soar.

Summer vacation is also the peak season when children go in for treatment and surgery, but parents are being urged to go to nearby hospitals for common complaints instead of crowding up at big hospitals.

Hospitals have also stretched the outpatient hours and even the treatment procedure.

Officials from Children's Hospital of Fudan University said yesterday it handled 7,800 outpatient patients on Tuesday. It usually deals with 5,000 to 6,000 patients per day.

"Children with cold, fever and other respiratory problems, and those seeking treatment on specific issues during the children's summer vacation, are the major reasons for the jump in patients," said Liu Yumei, a hospital official. "Our doctors have to work until midnight to finish all the outpatient workload."

The hospital is also organizing visits for healthy children and parents to get their feedback. Accordingly, the hospital is decorating the ceiling of its dental department with cartoons and plays light music to release the stress among children during treatment.
