Hospitals to hold talks on kidney disease

HOSPITALS and clinics across the city are holding free lectures from today through Monday to raise awareness of kidney disease and prevention.

More than 120 million people across China suffer from chronic kidney disease and many sufferers live with the condition for years before being diagnosed, Dr Ni Zhaohui, director of the Shanghai Medical Association, told a health seminar yesterday.

Today is World Kidney Day and also the start of Shanghai Kidney Week, said Ni, who is also a kidney specialist at Renji Hospital, one of the venues that will host the free presentations over the coming days.

“Kidney disease can start in childhood, and without proper health checks can go undetected for many years,” the doctor said.

“It’s vital, therefore, that people get themselves checked regularly so that if they find out that they have problems, remedial action can be taken straight away,” he said.

Over the coming days, about 300 medics will take part in the free lectures and consultations across the whole of Shanghai, Ni said.

As well as Renji, Huashan Hospital and Shanghai Children’s Hospital are taking part, he said, adding that people should contact their local health center or clinic for more information.
