India aiming to raise the standard of yoga
INDIA is to set up a yoga institute in Shanghai this month to train yoga teachers to professional standard.
Officials at the World Expo's India Pavilion found yoga and Indian dancing proved extremely popular with visitors and they wanted to leave them as a gift to the Chinese, they said yesterday.
The institute, and a dance studio, will be based at the Shanghai Film Art Academy.
Rajesh Kumar, director of the pavilion's public relations department, said yoga can help people keep fit and healthy by curing some ailments and chronic diseases.
"It is a science," said Kumar. "In India, to be a yoga teacher, one must receive training in a professional yoga institute to get the teaching certificates overseen by the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education."
Some yoga institutes and schools had been set up in the United States and Europe. However, there wasn't one in China yet, Kumar said.
He said pavilion officials had found many unqualified teachers in local clubs.
"Some of the Chinese yoga teachers had spent some time, one month to a year, in India. But they didn't have professional qualifications," Kumar said.
The India Pavilion is collaborating with the Shanghai Film Art Academy to develop the training school to help China produce its own professional yoga teachers.
Experts from the Yoga University of India and the Yoga Academy of India will be giving classes and students will get a certificates issued by the two schools after six to twelve months' study, Kumar said.
Dance tuition will help to produce Chinese choreographers skilled in the dances made popular by Bollywood movies.
"We want to help promote the dance to China," Kumar said. "Many Indian directors could also come to the country to shoot their movies."
