Insurance boon for expatriates
EXPATRIATE patients being treated at the VIP departments at Huadong Hospital and Zhongshan Hospital should soon be able to have the cost of their treatment covered by over 1,000 overseas medical insurance companies after their VIP services received accreditation yesterday at a meeting on international standards of medical care.
They are the first two Shanghai hospitals to pass the assessment under a Sino-British Medical Care Innovation Partner Project signed by the Chinese and British Ministry of Health in 2007, when the UK-based Bupa Group initiated a program to assess VIP departments.
"Many expatriates still have doubts about Chinese hospitals," said Dr Liu Jian from Huadong Hospital. "Most only visit local hospitals for common diseases. The Bupa assessment means our service is comparable with what they receive in their home countries and the treatment and medication are internationally recognized."
