Interactive platform to help stroke patients

SHANGHAI families with a stroke patient can get evaluation of the patient's condition and professional guidance on rehabilitation online late this year.

The interactive platform will be put in trial run in Pudong New Area by the end of this year. If successful, it will be promoted citywide, medical experts told a brain health forum held in Shanghai today.

Stroke has become a top killer in China. Some 2.5 million Chinese are diagnosed with the disease each year and 20 to 30 percent of them die from the cerebrovascular disease. The rest suffer disability and poor quality of life.

"Rehabilitation is extremely important for stroke patients to prevent another stroke and live a better life," said Dr Wang Guisong, director of Shanghai Brain Health Institute. "If rehabilitation is given timely, 60 to 70 percent of the patients can have good recovery and regain self-care ability. If given six to 12 months later, only 20 to 30 percent of them can recover well."

He said the trial will introduce bedside rehabilitation to patients soon after his or her condition stabilized. "It is a combination of physical training and speech training.
