Leukemia patient undergoes stem cell transplant
AN 18-year-old man received a hematopoietic stem cell transplant on Monday at Shanghai General Hospital, the 2,000th procedure of its kind using umbilical cord blood provided by the China Stem Cell Group Co.
He will spend two critical weeks in a bio-clean room to prevent infection, said the hospital yesterday.
“When taking chemotherapeutics to kill all his bad cells, his good cells and immune system were all broken down, so he has to stay in the clean environment over the next two weeks for the transplanted hematopoietic stem cells to rebuild enough good cells and immunity,” said Wang Chun, director of the hematology department at the hospital.
The next week will be difficult as the patient, surnamed Li, may experience fever, vomiting and ulcerations, said Wang. Li was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in November last year and urgently needed hematopoietic stem cells.
The company, the largest of its kind in China, found four matches from its umbilical cord blood banks and one in Chongqing was the most suitable.
