Local team wins top award for stent

A LOCALLY developed medical device for treating blocked coronary arteries won the top prize at this year's Shanghai Science and Technology Awards, which were handed out yesterday.
The drug-eluting biodegradable stent, invented by a team led by Dr Ge Junbo from Zhongshan Hospital, earned the prize as it was initially only half the price of imported ones. Similar imported stents have since dropped in price from 40,000 yuan (US$6,126) to 20,000 yuan due to the competition.
Ge and his team's stent helps prevent repeat blockages and has so far been used by more than 900 domestic hospitals, benefiting over 80,000 patients.
One scientist and 297 projects received awards in the following categories: natural sciences, technological inventions, science and technology progress and international cooperation.
