Mainland's first kids' dialysis center set
THE Longhua Temple yesterday donated 4.5 million yuan (US$658,786) to set up a dialysis center at the Children's Hospital of Fudan University.
It's the first children's dialysis center ever to be launched on the Chinese mainland, the hospital said.
Poor children will be able to receive free or discounted dialysis at the center thanks to the donation, which will cover children's medical expenses and buy medicines.
Chronic kidney disease among the nation's children is increasing. The incidence rose from 1 to 2 percent in 1980s to the current 4.8 percent. Without proper treatment, 5 to 10 percent of such children can develop kidney failure in five years, medical experts said.
Shanghai is in the midst of a five-year urine-screening of 100,000 kindergarten students and 20,000 primary and middle school students for early kidney disease detection.
