Man given CPR on road, survives
EXPERTS in the city are calling on local residents to pick up basic emergency medical skills after a man who had a cardiac arrest and fell on the road was saved by passers-by who administered CPR to him before help arrived.
The doctors are also urging government to install more cardiac defibrillators in public places like in some Western countries that can help during emergencies.
The man surnamed Xu felt uneasy in the chest on Saturday. As the Pudong New Area People’s Hospital was close by, Xu and his wife decided to walk to the hospital.
But on the way to the hospital Xu suffered a heart attack and collapsed on the road.
His wife, surnamed Zhi, cried out for help and managed to attract two people who gave him cardiopulmonary resuscitation for 10 minutes that turned out to be a life saver.
It was Xu’s luck that his savior was Dr Zhang Chunya, who happened to hear the cries for help and walked over to check Xu’s condition.
Another doctor from the Pudong hospital joined Zhang later.
“I saw the man’s lips had turned purple and could not feel his pulse,” Zhang told Shanghai Television.
“I carried out a CPR immediately and he responded to it. He was conscious when I tried to talk to him. We kept giving him CPR until ambulance arrived. If we had stopped, he would have lost consciousness at once.”
An ambulance arrived and rushed Xu to the hospital.
The roadside medical help gave him a new lease of life. He was in stable condition and was recovering, the hospital said.
Zhi expressed her gratitude to the two doctors. The couple have two minor children.
Doctors said winter is usually the peak season for heart attacks and cardiopulmonary resuscitation was crucial to reduce the number of fatalities.
“Young and middle-aged people should be made aware of heart attacks,” said Dr Zhang Dadong from the Shanghai Yodak Cardio-Thoracic Hospital.
“People with cardiac diseases like congenital heart disease and carditis caused by cold are in danger when it gets cold or the person is very tired,” Dr Zhang said. “Proper exercises, low fat diet, regular health check and proper understanding on basic health care and basic life-saving skills are important to prevent heart attack deaths.”
