Medical experts allowed to practice at new Pudong center

Medical experts from leading state-owned hospitals will be able to practice medicine at the new Shanghai International Medical Center in the Pudong New Area.

It will start operating from March next year, officials said yesterday.

Managed by Singapore-based ParkwayHealth, the largest healthcare group in Asia, the medical center will explore new operational method that is different from the state-owned hospitals.

Besides doctors, most medical experts working in the center are those practicing medicine in more than one medical facility.

As part of the health reforms in China, doctors are now allowed to work in different hospitals and clinics instead of just one facility.

“We have reached an agreement with five leading hospitals under Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine,” said Zhang Chengyu, hospital director of SIMC. “Doctors at leading departments of the hospitals will also work in our center.”

The center will also hire doctors from foreign countries.

To meet the different demands on medical services, Shanghai is building two high-end medical zones in Pudong and Minhang District. Both zones will host many world-leading hospitals and clinics and branches of local state-owned hospitals.

Different from crowded state-owned hospitals, clinics and hospitals in the two zones will offer quiet and good environment with service in line with international standard.
