Medical information portal launched in city
PATIENTS and their families can look up information about medical procedures on a Website that was launched yesterday in Shanghai.
The site (www.cmda.org.cn), created by the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, aims to give members of the public detailed information about the price, likely duration and procedure of common surgeries, so they can make an informed choice about whether to go under the knife.
The service, which also includes online health consultation facilities, is only available in Chinese. However, versions in English, German, Korean and Japanese will be launched in about six months, said officials from the information network center of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association.
"The association is the only facility entitled to administer doctors' professional licences and qualifications in China," said Hao Deming, Shanghai director of the CMDA information network center. "The Website is the first to offer online guidance on common surgeries to let patients know average costs of such a practice, how doctors perform the operation and how long it usually takes."
He said educational videos are also available on the Website to give patients and their families more detailed information about medical procedures.
"This information can help patients choose appropriate hospitals and doctors and spot any problems early, for example if the fee for their surgery is much more expensive than those listed online or their doctors' practices seem quite different from those shown in our video clips," Hao said. "Our information could serve as reference material in a medical dispute, because all the information on our site has been scrutinized and approved by experts."
The association also launched another Website yesterday (www.cmda.gov.cn), which will be used by the association to manage the 2 million people with a doctor's license in China.
