Mom with pink eye collects from rehab facility

A new mother reached a compensation agreement with a postnatal rehabilitation center, which failed to warn her or take precautions against her pink eye, a highly communicable disease that spread to five babies in the facility.

The woman was hospitalized there in mid-July, and her own baby girl caught the disease early this month.

"The center never warned me about the infectious disease and even said it could be my baby's own problem when she started to have red and swollen eyes early this month," the woman, who declined to be identified, told Shanghai Daily yesterday.

"We took her to five hospitals for the disease. It is such suffering for a newborn baby."

Cici International Maternity and Infancy Care Ltd, owner of the center, refused to comment about the issue yesterday.

The woman paid 40,000 yuan (US$6,260) for one-month care after her birth. In China, the first month after delivery is called yuezi. A good rest and rehabilitation in the month can ensure a good recovery for the mother and good growth of the baby.

The woman said the center's biggest mistake was to hide the truth from parents and fail to inform them about the infectious disease, also known as conjunctivitis, in time.
