Mosquitoes likely worse this year
SHANGHAI enters the peak of its annual mosquito season next month, and the number may be higher this year because of recent rains and a large number already hatched, officials from Shanghai Center for Disease Control and Prevention said yesterday.
The density of mosquitoes in May was 2.05 percent, rising by 6.45 percent over the same period last year. The density climbed to 10.87 percent this month, 11.6 percent more than last June.
The density represents how many sampling stations detected mosquitoes.
In order to control mosquitoes and flies, Shanghai kicked off a 100-day cleaning campaign by the Shanghai Patriotic Health Campaign Commission yesterday.
The focus is on construction sites, Metro stations, residential areas, underground parking lots, green lands, wet markets and suburban areas.
