Nanjing Road W. restaurants say no to smoke

RESTAURANTS along Nanjing Road West have agreed to introduce no smoking areas before World Expo 2010.

About 100 restaurants in Plaza 66, Westgate Mall, CITIC Square, Jiu Guang Department Store and along the road will set up no smoking areas from June, Labor Daily reported today.
Distinctive "no smoking signs" will be placed in the restaurants, Song Hua, an official from Jing'an District Sanitation Supervision Office, said.

About 25 percent of local people smoke and figures suggest that 50 percent of men smoke.

A recent survey found 73 percent of hotel guests wanted Shanghai to ban smoking in public and 74 percent of restaurant guests reported being annoyed by others smoking nearby.

The no smoking areas will also be expanded to hotels with three stars or more. Currently Four Seasons, Jc Mandarin and The Portman Ritz-Carlton hotel have no smoking floors.
