New charity for epileptic children
A charity program to aid families with epileptic children and to train medical staff in epilepsy treatment was launched in Shanghai today.
Funded by Project HOPE, a US-based non-governmental charity organization, the program has chosen ten children's hospitals, including Shanghai Children's Medical Center, to train pediatricians in epilepsy diagnosis and treatment and to conduct public education.
Li Shizhuo, director of the Chinese Epilepsy Association, said the country's incidence of epilepsy is 35 per 100,000 people. Currently there are 9 million epileptic patients in China and 6 million of them suffer repeated seizures.
Li said about half of the patients have no access to proper diagnosis and treatment. Many patients and their families carry a stigma because of the disease.
