New clinic to advise 2nd-time mothers
A maternity hospital in Shanghai has opened a new clinic in expectation of the likely increase in new births due to changes in the country’s family planning regulations.
“We have opened a specialist consultation clinic that will provide guidance for couples who are thinking of having a second child,” said Dr Xu Hui, vice president of Shanghai Changning District Maternity and Infant Health Hospital.
“The possibility of complications is much higher in women over 35, and also for mothers who had their first child by cesarean section,” he said.
The recently proposed changes to China’s family planning rules, which are expected to take effect next year, allow all couples to have two children.
In Shanghai, the move is expected to result in about 60,000 more babies being born every year, the city’s health authority said yesterday.
Currently, between 200,000 and 220,000 children are born annually in the city.
